An excellent example of painting from the surrealism movement , which touches on deep issues of society, such as human alienation in an urban and industrial world, internal conflicts and the anguish of existence.
The human figures, with distorted faces and exaggerated features – often with masks or closed eyes – refer to alienation, loss of identity or even oppression; something reinforced by the presence of the gallows in the background on the left, which may indicate violence or political asphyxiation.
The unnatural postures of the bodies and their distorted anatomy probably symbolize intense psychological states or social imbalances. The use of bright colors enhances the intensity of the drama of the scene.
A work that exercises social satire and political criticism on mass culture and human alienation, in an industrial environment, raising questions about identity, existence, freedoms and alienation in the modern world.
The theme of the work seems to belong to the early post-war environment, with a strong element of trauma and existential anguish.
