Extremely rare wooden ceremonial mask of the Dan tribe from Liberia, West Africa.
Its shape is elongated and slightly oval with pronounced large oval eye openings and geometric features, it stands out for the distinctive holes that decorate the perimeter of the eye area and cheeks, filled with white pigment.
The open, oval-shaped mouth, with inserted real teeth (probably from some kind of monkey) give a strong expressiveness to the mask.
Traces of wear on the wood and on the fastening holes indicate the long-term ritual use of the mask, probably in dances, initiation ceremonies or other sacred occasions.
